Transcript from Real Women Have Curves

Garcia Home

The family is playing a board game when Mr. Guzman, Ana Garcia’s high school counselor calls at their home to announce that she has been accepted at a prestigious university in New York City, across the country from their California home. Ana’s mother is against Ana going to New York and voices various concerns. Ana’s sister Estela owns a factory that makes bridal gowns and Ana’s mother wants Ana to work there.

ANA GARCIA

Ha-ha-ha. Your turn.

RAUL GARCIA

Gracias, mama.

Off-camera conversation.

A VOICE

Whose turn is it?

ANOTHER VOICE

Mine.

A VOICE

Here’s my piece.

CARMEN GARCIA

What do you want?

GUZMAN

Senora, can I please speak to your daughter?

CARMEN GARCIA

No, she’s not here.

ANA GARCIA

Mama, what are you talking about? I’m right here, open the door.

RAUL GARCIA

What’s going on now?

CARMEN GARCIA

Es este hombre que siempre está buscando a Ana.

RAUL GARCIA

Esta bien, dejame a ver.

(to Mr. Guzman)

Buenas tardes.

GUZMAN

Buenas tardes.

RAUL GARCIA

Pase.

GUZMAN

Gracias.

(to Ana)

You did it.

ANA GARCIA

What?

GUZMAN

You got in.

ANA GARCIA

What?

GUZMAN

The Dean called me personally with the news.

ANA GARCIA

My God, are you serious?

GUZMAN

Your daughter’s been accepted for admission to Columbia University  with a full scholarship.

ANA GARCIA

My god.

RAUL GARCIA

Please, come in, sit down.

ANA GARCIA

I got accepted with a scholarship?

RAUL GARCIA

So, where is this Columbia University?

GUZMAN

It’s in New York City.

CARMEN GARCIA

New York?

ANA GARCIA

What’s wrong with that?

RAUL GARCIA

Look, Mr. Guzman, it isn’t that we don’t want Ana to go to college, but all the way to New York? I’m sure there must be wonderful colleges in this area.

GUZMAN

But none of them is Columbia University.

ANA GARCIA

Papa, you don’t understand, it’s one of the best schools in the nation.

GUZMAN

Sir, you left your country for a better opportunity…and now, it’s Ana’s turn.

RAUL GARCIA

Look, Mr. Guzman…

CARMEN GARCIA

Raul! Mira Senor Guzman…we are a family, and we intend to stay that way.

ANA GARCIA

Mama, it’s not gonna change anything.

RAUL GARCIA

Por favor. Esta bien, Carmencita. Mr. Guzman, Ana is going to go to college. But not now. I didn’t come this far to see my family break apart.

ANA GARCIA

Papa, I don’t understand. How is this breaking us apart?

CARMEN GARCIA

What about Estela and the factory?

ESTELA GARCIA

Mama!

ANA GARCIA

What about it?

CARMEN GARCIA

What about abuelo? You want to abandon him?

ANA GARCIA

No.

CARMEN GARCIA

Well, thank you very much, Senor Guzman…but this is a family matter.

RAUL GARCIA

Thank you very much for coming all the way here to tell us.
