Save The Last Dance

Transcript from Save The Last Dance

Sara grew up in the Pennsylvania countryside but now lives with her single dad father in Baltimore, Maryland. She’s gone from an almost all-white environment to an almost all-black environment. What she has in common with her new school mates is a love of dance – but an entirely different kind of dance.

MRS. GWYNN

My door is always open. And contrary to hall rumor, you can talk to me. Do you have any questions or concerns? No questions, no answers. All right. This is Mr. Campbell’s class, and he’s expecting you.

MR. CAMPBELL

Truman Capote. ln Cold Blood represents a complete turning point in American history and American literature–you want to take that cap off and tell us why, Mr. Ricard?

RICARD

Gay rights. – The Com-pote dude who wrote it–

MR. CAMPBELL

Capote.

RICARD

Capote ?

MR. CAMPBELL

Capote.

RICARD

Sweet tooth. Straight-up fag, Mr. C. l’m serious. Flaming.

MR. CAMPBELL

Thank you very much. We can now promote you up to kindergarten. Anybody else? Once, twice. Miss Johnson, I apologize if any of this is over your head, but if you see me after class, I’ll give you some chapters. Anybody ? Come on.

SARA

lt’s a non-fiction novel. Capote mixed true events with things that he couldn’t know, so he made them up.  He created a new genre.

PATRICK

White folks back then felt safe. Capote scared them. He took hard-core crime out of the ghetto and placed it in America’s backyard, that’s what makes the book special.

SARA

Yeah, that’s part of it.

PATRICK

That’s all of it.

MR. CAMPBELL

We got a debate going on now.

PATRICK

Capote wasn’t the first. Richard Wright, James Baldwin did the same thing. Wasn’t nobody trying to read them, though.

SARA

A lot of people read them.

PATRICK

A lot of people like who? You? Didn’t think so.

RICARD

Hey, hey, hey, yo, Mr. C? Mr. C?

MR. CAMPBELL

Yeah?

RICARD

Your girl needs to bone up. I think you need to give her a pass to the lib’ary.  We need to get security, a parent-teacher’s conference, something going on.

MR. CAMPBELL

Why don’t you lend her yours? ‘Cause obviously, you don’t ever use it.
