A Very Long Engagement (Un long dimanche de fiançailles)

Based on a novel. To escape further military service during World War I, five French soldiers are convicted of self-mutilation. They are condemned to face near certain death in the no man’s land between the French and German trenches. It seems all were killed, but Mathilde, the fiancée of one soldier, refuses to give up hope and begins to uncover clues as to what actually took place and discovers the brutally corrupt system used by the French government to deal with those who tried to escape the front.

Another film that explores the corruption of that war is the 1957 American film Paths of Glory.
